Blacklist firms contributing to haze

The Star (7 July 2007)

PENANG: Indonesia must release the names of Malaysian companies allegedly involved in illegal forest burning in Indonesia.

These companies must be blacklisted and prevented from operating anywhere in the region, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng’s political secretary Ng Wei Aik told reporters after handing over a protest memorandum to the Indonesian Consul General Moenir Ari Soenanda yesterday.

The memorandum urged the Indonesian government to speed up the ratification of an Asean agreement on transboundary haze pollution.

“The Malaysian government must take a stronger stand on the ongoing haze problem in the region. We must get the names of the local companies if it is true that they are involved,” he said, adding that the DAP had been highlighting the need to tackle the haze problem more effectively for the past four years.
